Finally Master Sign Language

This course is jam-packed with beginning and intermediate levels of conversational Sign Language lessons, practical vocabulary skills, and cultural facts that will make learning sign language that much more fun. So, whether you're a beginner, an advanced speaker, or anywhere in between, you'll find the information you're looking for with Finally Master Sign Language. We were so impressed with how easy it was to learn this language. Most people have some background with the language through their schooling, but even if you don't, this is the simplest and least intimidating product on the market. To help you learn, the producers have included simple, everyday conversations, signing practice, grammar exercises to learn how to put together signs to form a sentence, and vocabulary builders.

We couldn't believe how quickly we progressed through the course. As your vocabulary increases, the conversations became more complex, but we were amazed at how easy it was to follow along. The DVDs were simple to navigate and it was extremely helpful to watch someone speaking the language. You will quickly realize how important the nonverbal communication is in learning to sign. We were even able to fill in the blanks of conversations after the first lesson.

Bottom Line: Although Finally Master Sign Language seems slightly more expensive, we couldn't find another product for this price on the market that would take a student from beginner to advanced speaker by the end of the course. With this course learning to sign was so easy and fun. With all of the learning tools we received when we purchased it, there isn't a better value for your money. We highly recommend this product.

Interax Video Sign Language Course

As with all of the courses we reviewed, by using the Interax Video Sign Language Course you will develop signing skills at your own pace and convenience. This course offers hundreds of signs and gives adequate practice for each lesson. The great part about learning to sign through video is that it shows the motion, speed, direction, and important facial expressions of each sign. The instructor clearly illustrates and immediately repeats each sign. This allows you an opportunity to perform the sign. The English equivalent is also provided on the screen, allowing the hearing impaired to use the course without a caption decoder.

This 6.5 hour video course is divided into 57 subject related lessons on 6 DVDs. Unfortunately, that’s really not enough time and instruction to learn how to speak fluently with sign. You will be able to take a quiz at the end of each lesson. The course claims that upon completion, you will have learned more than 1200 signs of American Sign Language. We didn’t count. The complete course comes with 6 DVDs and a study guide for $199, which is extremely expensive for a little over six hours of instruction. There are much better values on the market.

Bottom Line: This product is outdated and overpriced. You will have a much better experience buying one of the more thorough and up-to-date options.

Say It with Sign

The instructors of this course have been teaching Sign Language to children and adults of all ages for twenty years. That certainly makes them qualified to teach this course. There are forty half-hour lessons in the series, each containing a series of new signs, several Fingerspelling exercises, and some sample dialogue given to teach conversational phrasing. That equals sixteen hours of instruction. Every fifth lesson is a review of the preceding four lessons.

If you buy the DVDs individually, they are $40 each. If you buy the entire series, it is $300. Again, as you can see from the picture, the course is terribly outdates, but the instruction is still relevant.

Bottom Line: Although they claim to have the most comprehensive instruction on American sign language, other products have caught up and surpassed Say It with Sign. Again, dollar for dollar, there are other, better products on the market.

Say It by Signing
          and
Getting Started with Signing

These DVDs feature the basics of American Sign Language (ASL) with emphasis on conversations. This complete program offers a simple, step-by-step approach to this rich and beautiful language for use in practical, everyday situations. Here is what you’ll learn: The Family Reunion, Pronouns, The American Manual Alphabet, Occupations, Saturday at Home (vocabulary of rooms in house and a bunch of verbs), Prepositions, The Doctor's Appointment, Parts of a Sign, The Picnic, Signs for the Weather, Time of Day, Our Vacation, Plurals, Time, and the Calendar.

With these DVDs, you will learn around 800 signs. The content and lessons are very well organized and structured; however, the speed at which they sign in the lessons is very fast. You may have to rewind a few times for the more complex ones. Also, during a couple of the skits the person "learning" signs from the deaf person didn't sign the exact same way, so it tended to be a little confusing at times. It seemed a little advanced for someone with no signing experience.

Bottom Line: In about two hours of instruction you can apparently learn around 800 signs. That indicates, as you might guess, that basically the signs are demonstrated and reviewed a few times and then you move on. They don’t leave much time for learning, so you will be watching and rewatching these videos often.
